This spring, Stockholm’s iconic brasserie Riche pays tribute to one of the most influential figures in Swedish culinary history: Tore Wretman. Marking 110 years since his birth, the restaurant will host a series of celebratory after-work events that highlight both his legacy and his enduring impact on modern Swedish cuisine.

A Pioneer of Swedish Gastronomy

Tore Wretman is widely regarded as a founding force behind Sweden’s contemporary food culture. His work not only elevated traditional Swedish cooking but also helped establish its international reputation. Many of today’s leading chefs and restaurateurs trace their culinary philosophy back to Wretman’s influence.

“Wretman laid the foundation for so much of what we now take for granted in Swedish gastronomy,” says Björn Wahlund, restaurant manager at Riche. “It’s thanks to him that Swedish cuisine holds the status it does today. Honoring him feels entirely natural.”

A Three-Part Celebration

The homage unfolds over three Thursdays—April 23, April 30, and May 7—culminating on Wretman’s birthday. Held in Riche’s Stora Baren between 4 and 6 PM, the events are designed as relaxed after-work gatherings, open to all without reservation.

Guests can enjoy classic smörgåstårta (Swedish sandwich cake), champagne, and a specially created cocktail featuring absinthe and cognac—an homage to Wretman’s known fondness for cognac and licorice. The drink will debut alongside Riche’s new spring cocktail menu.

In addition, visitors can indulge in coffee paired with cognac and licorice, while Riche’s full à la carte menu and beverage selection remain available.

Continuing a Culinary Tradition

The tribute follows last year’s successful celebration of chef Erik Lallerstedt, another key figure shaped by Wretman’s legacy. That event featured Lallerstedt’s favorite pairing of Gammel Dansk and champagne—underscoring Riche’s commitment to honoring Sweden’s gastronomic heritage through personal and sensory experiences.

A Historic Setting

Located by Nybroviken, Riche has been a cornerstone of Stockholm’s dining scene since 1893. Known for its blend of French brasserie tradition and Swedish influences, the restaurant remains a vibrant meeting place from lunch through late evening.

With this tribute, Riche not only celebrates a legendary figure but also invites a new generation to experience the flavors, traditions, and stories that helped shape Sweden’s culinary identity.
