Cheesy, moreish and delicious, pizza is one of the world’s most popular foods. Falstaff has gathered five quick pizza facts that will fuel your cravings even more.

1. The most expensive pizza in the world costs US$12,000

You will be shocked when you see the price tag of Louis XIII, the most expensive pizza in the world. The US$12,000 pizza, created by renowned chef Renato Viola, takes more than 72 hours to make.

The toppings were built for pure luxury. They come with three rare types of caviar – Oscietra Royal Prestige, Kaspia Oscietra Royal Classic from the Iranian coast and Kaspia Beluga. Beluga caviar is the world’s most expensive variety and a pound costs about US$4,500. Adding even more exclusivity to the experience, the pizza also contains Norwegian lobster and eight types of cheese.

2. More than five billion pizzas are sold worldwide each year

More than five billion pizzas are sold worldwide each year and an estimated 350 slices are eaten every second. These numbers demonstrate the full extent of the humble pizza's popularity. On average, Americans consume about three billion pizzas each year, accounting for about 30% of global pizza consumption. As one of the world’s most popular foods, pizza is well represented in the US with about 70,000 pizzerias across the country.

3. Deep-fried pizza is sold in Scotland

You can easily find deep-fried pizza in many chip shops throughout Scotland. Cheap and cheerful, a pizza is deep-fried in hot oil instead of being baked in an oven. The dish can be served as a "pizza supper" (with chips) or single (without chips). Originating in the 1970s, this type of pizza is a popular dish in Glasgow and Fife.

4. Fascinating pizza world records

People can go crazy over pizza and they love breaking world records. New Zealander Josh Anderson holds the world record for the world’s fastest pizza eater, finishing a 12-inch pizza in just one minute and 45 seconds. The world class competitive eater, Geoffrey Esper, holds the world record for eating 19.25 9-inch pizzas in ten minutes, a rate of about two pizzas per minute.

5. Most popular pizza toppings

While there are about 34 million ways to mix toppings and create a unique pizza depending on the size, sauce, cheese and more, people have explicit preferences for toppings. In Japan, squid and eel are the most popular pizza toppings, while in the US and UK, pepperoni comes out on top. In Brazil, surprisingly, green peas are the most-liked pizza option.
