Where to Find the Best Pizza on the Danish Riviera

The north coast of Zealand has long been known as the Danish Riviera—a stretch of shoreline dotted with luxury summer houses, sweeping sea views, and charming coastal towns. Though high-end restaurants abound, sometimes you’re simply craving the perfect pizza. We’ve found the three best spots to satisfy that craving.

After a long day by the sea, there's nothing better than winding down with a great pizza and a perfectly chosen glass of wine. The same holds true for a day on the coast of North Zealand — also called the Danish Riviera — known for its golden beaches, quiet summer houses, and subtle affluence.

Here, everyone likes to indulge in the simple joy of dough, tomato, and cheese — a culinary pleasure so simple but yet so delicious. Locals and visitors alike linger over mouth-watering pizza pies made in wood-fired ovens, sip chilled rosé or a coastal white wine, and let the sea salt settle on their skin. Because even in a region characterized by elegance, a perfect pizza is still one of life’s purest indulgences — a reminder that happiness can be wonderfully simple.

So, where should you go when cravings strike? We’re introducing you to the three best pizzerias on the Danish Riviera.

Den Røde Tomat is tucked away in the charming, boho-chic seaside town of Tisvildeleje. Inside, you’ll find just a few seats, but the cozy garden out back is the perfect place to savor what might be the best pizzas this town has to offer.

Den Røde Tomat (translation: The Red Tomato) blends traditional Roman-style thin-crust pizza making with fresh, locally sourced ingredients. The menu is organized into tempting themes such as “The Tomato, The Cheese, and The Vegetable”; “The Tomato, The Cheese, and The Fish”; and “Delicate Pizzas for True Gourmets”.

Everything on the menu is worth trying, but standouts include the pizza topped with radicchio, ventricina, and taleggio cheese, as well as the version featuring zucchini and lemon — both guaranteed to make any pizza lover’s heart skip a beat. On a warm summer evening, we recommend ordering a few pizzas to share and a good bottle of wine — then simply sit back, unwind, and let time slow down.

On the northern tip of the island of Zealand lies Gilleleje, a historic fishing village turned lively year-round coastal town that offers plenty of great dining options. If you’re craving simple yet perfectly executed thin-crust pizzas, Bolværket is the place to go.

Bolværket is the in-house restaurant of “Kulturhavn Gilleleje”, a cultural hub with a library, art gallery, and movie theater. It’s almost a ritual here to enjoy a pizza before or after catching a movie upstairs — though it’s just as tempting to drop in simply for a pizza paired with a glass of wine or a locally brewed Gilleleje Bryg beer.

The menu features around 15 pizzas (along with a few other Italian-inspired dishes), ranging from classics like Margherita or Capricciosa pizzas to more creative options such as an elevated Caprese or one topped with giant prawns and plenty of garlic.

Can’t decide? No problem. You can share a few different pizzas or go for the impressive half-meter pizza, which comes with three kinds of toppings. Or, even better: Visit on one of Bolværket’s popular pizza buffet nights, where all-you-can-eat pizzas are served buffet-style straight from the wood-fired oven.

If you’re craving rugged coastal scenery paired with warm, crisp pizza, Heatherhill is the place to go. This heather-covered landscape rolls gently from inland woodlands down to a dramatic stretch of coastline west of Rågeleje — the kind of spot that feels wild, windswept, and unmistakably Danish.

A walk here is a must, but so is stopping by the small pizza place right next to Heatherhill’s parking lot. In a modest building shaded by tall pine trees, you’ll find Il Terrazzo — a charming outdoor-only pizzeria that captures the spirit of simple seaside dining.

Step inside to order, and you’ll immediately feel the heat radiating from the wood-fired oven. Moments later, you’ll be seated outside, taking in the coastal air while savoring pizzas with a taste as good as the view.

The pizzas — like most of the area’s finest — are thin-crust, Roman-style creations with thoughtfully chosen toppings. Among the many tempting options, the Scamorza pizza (with its smoky, melty cheese) and the Diavola, topped with spicy salami, are standouts.
