Portuguese footballer Moutinho sees red (and white)

Midfielder releases limited edition wines as part of Wolverhampton Wanderers collaboration with Halfpenny Green Vineyard.

Joao Moutinho has received just one red card in 157 games for Premier League club Wolves, which isn’t a bad return for the tireless battling midfielder. The fact that the Portugal international is now seeing red has more to do with a new cooperation between his club and Halfpenny Green Vineyard: Moutinho has inspired a limited edition of wines, Football Heaven, with bottles available in red, white and sparkling versions.

The limited-edition red is described as ‘fruit-driven and approachable, with aromas of plum, violet, and sweet spices’. It pairs well with medium cheeses, lamb, and game dishes (but is just as good by itself). The white is pale gold in colour, with aromas of lemon, pear, and herbal notes; an easy-going medium-dry white blend, with Huxelrebe giving a soft, well-rounded body, it works at its best as an aperitif, but will pair well with white meats or vegetable-based dishes. The brut sparkling is a classic blend of English varieties, showing a pale gold colour in the glass, with a delicate mousse, and fine, free-flowing bubbles. Over 18 months of bottle age adds developed brioche and hazelnut characters to create a rich and complex wine. Perfect for all occasions, but pairing brilliantly with oysters, crab, or fish and chips.

Clive Vickers, managing director of Halfpenny Green Wine Estate and a Wolves fan, said: “This collaboration is extra special for me personally. As a business which has supplied the club in former times, it is a great privilege to work on the Joao Moutinho range of limited-edition wines.”
