Kartlien

The region of Inner Cartelia is located in a large area in the Kura Valley and includes the lowlands of Gori and Mukhran. About 15 percent of Georgian production comes from this region. European style wines are produced here for export, as well as base wines for brandy and sparkling wine production. It is moderately warm here, summers are hot and dry. Due to low precipitation (350 to 500 millimeters annual average), artificial irrigation is necessary. Georgia's capital Tbilisi with its large sparkling wine cellars and distilleries is located in this region. The oldest winery in Tbilisi, founded in 1897, has a rare collection of about 1,600 wines with a volume of around 150,000 bottles. Not only regional products are stored there, but also very old foreign ones, for example, Cognac from 1811, Madeira and Marsala from 1822, Sherry from 1848, and Tokay from 1846.
