Posavje

The Sava Valley, within the wider Posavje region, lies in the southeast of Slovenia near the Sava River and has a unique climate barely found elsewhere in Europe. It is the country's smallest wine region with just under 3,000 hectares of vineyards. Here, the cold influence of the Alps meets the continental heat from the east; in addition there is a noticeable coastal influence from the nearby Adriatic Sea. Depending on the location, it is possible to grow white as well as red grapes. The local wine is Cviček, a pale red wine of relatively low alcohol (8.5-10vol%), dry, with a distinctively acid spine. Unusually, it is required to be a blend of red and white varieties. Vibrant and fruity, it is not surprising that it goes well with the local cuisine. Over half the vineyards are red, planted mainly to Blaufränkisch and Žametovka, white varieties include Welschriesling and Kraljevina, although there are some plantings of Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay. Winters may be harsh but can create the perfect conditions for ice wine. Many of Sava's wines rarely cross the border due to high local demand; as the local Slovenian saying goes, 'Wine is food'.
