The whole of Berlin seems to be addicted to classic French cuisine, as the numerous new openings in this area show. No wonder, because anyone who is anyone can hardly get enough of oysters and the like. With "Le Consulat", a new representative of French feel-good cuisine has opened in Charlottenburg and at first glance promises exactly what you would expect from such a restaurant. The interior of the large dining room is hip-chic, but still cosy. Reading the menu makes your mouth water: oysters au gratin, chicken supreme, snails, scallops in vermouth sauce, mashed potatoes, crème brulée. Unfortunately, what finishes up on the plate does not quite live up to the expectations raised by the menu. The oysters au gratin look a little dull under their breadcrumb crust and lack the acidity and freshness we had hoped for. Fortunately, the menu also offers raw oysters. The escargots à la bourguignonne, or snails au gratin, are solid. The chicken supreme is impressive in its quality. The scallops are promising thanks to the vermouth flavour, but fail due to an unfortunate texture. The crème brûlée, on the other hand, is outstanding.
Overall, the impression is that there is undoubtedly potential for good French cuisine at "Le Consulat", even if it has not yet fully developed. In order to lower the inhibition threshold, the restaurant offers a reasonably priced lunch menu during the day, including vegetarian options, for 16 to 19 euros. The service is courteous yet casual, the atmosphere is tasteful - the botanical wallpaper is a real eye-catcher.
