Singer Sam Smith Secretly Shares Food Tips on Instagram

Fourteen million followers keep up with the pop star’s life. Yet only a few thousand track what he eats — on a little-known secondary account.

When superstars travel, they usually leave behind autographs, perhaps a few paparazzi photos — and, ideally, a generous hotel bill. Sam Smith, however, is currently leaving something else behind: restaurant recommendations.

The British Grammy winner is performing a sold-out residency at the newly renovated Castro Theatre in San Francisco — and, along the way, has become something of an unofficial food scout for the city. Not on his main account with its millions of followers, but on a low-key side profile called @samserved. Around 38,600 followers watch the pop star eat his way through sushi bars and delicatessens.

A Pop Star on a Culinary Quest

The account had existed for some time but remained largely dormant — until San Francisco seemingly awakened Smith’s appetite. Since February, photos and short videos from restaurant visits have appeared there almost daily. The culinary range feels surprisingly down-to-earth: from a casual poke stop at Hook Fish Co. in the Outer Sunset to juicy chicken wings at Pier 23 and San Tung.

Even a snapshot of a simple cardboard lemonade stand set up by neighborhood children selling homemade drinks made it onto the profile.

Still, the pop star appears to have a soft spot for haute cuisine. Another post shows Smith visiting the legendary three-star restaurant The French Laundry in Napa Valley.

Food Brings Out His Charming Side

Where Smith ends up dining seems to be decided largely on impulse, guided by appetite rather than itinerary. When the singer appeared at the traditional Italian Molinari Delicatessen, owner Nicola Mastrelli later admitted he had little choice but to “try to stay cool.”

Instead of celebrity airs, Smith mainly showed curiosity — particularly about the deli’s more than 130-year history.

Other restaurants shared similar impressions with the San Francisco Standard. At neighborhood spot Firefly Restaurant, there was brief panic when the reservation became known. The excitement quickly faded, however: the guest simply ordered fried chicken, trout with a furikake crust and shrimp with cheddar grits — and photographed the moment like an enthusiastic foodie.

Only one consequence of Smith’s culinary curiosity may occasionally prove inconvenient. Before one performance, the singer dryly remarked that the particularly spicy dish he had tried earlier that day might not have been the wisest preparation for an evening on stage.
