Toasting King Charles III with unique Marmite-inspired creation

Cardiff artist produces a likeness of the new monarch using slices of bread, a toaster and Marmite.

While it has been widely reported that King Charles III’s breakfast of choice is a soft-boiled egg, one artist has used that British staple morning starter of toast and Marmite to create a very unique likeness of the new monarch ahead of his coronation.

On hearing that the new king is partial to a sandwich containing Marmite, – you either love it or hate it, apparently – Nathan Wyburn from Cardiff got the toaster on to help get the creative juices flowing, the result a brilliant likeness using bread and yeast extract.

The 33-year-old Welshman wanted to celebrate coronation week by using the ingredients from one of the King's favourite sandwiches – fried egg, pesto, gruyere cheese and Marmite in an organic granary bap is reportedly the snack of choice for the monarch.

“When I found out that the King himself actually loves Marmite as part of his favourite sandwich, that seemed even more fitting to know that he would totally approve of this," said Nathan, known in the UK for his appearances on Britain’s Got Talent a decade ago, where he showed off his skills creating likenesses from toast and Marmite.

"The Marmite itself allows for a perfect tonal difference in the portrait – it's quite dark against the colour of the toast, so it allows me to get that contrast that I need for the portrait to pop out,"

Nathan admitted the most boring part of the process was toasting the 42 slices of bread to create the artwork but, not one to waste food, he and his housemates willingly demolished the portrait after it was videoed and photographed for posterity.
