Tesco to open pop-up London pub to help celebrate King’s Coronation

King in the Castle in Farringdon promises to be “an affordable option” with proceeds going to The Prince’s Trust.

They’ve opened petrol stations, express stores, have their own bank and mobile phone operation, and now Tesco is branching out into the pub business – for a limited time only.

The supermarket chain is opening a pop-up pub in London in the build-up to the Coronation, the Castle venue at Farringdon becoming King in the Castle on May 4 and 5, offering a themed menu featuring Tesco’s limited-edition Coronation food range.

The King in the Castle is promising to be “an affordable option” for customers wanting to start the Coronation celebrations early, with the usual pub range along with a few specials on the drink and food menu: a trifle-inspired bellini, the Prince’s Crust Pie, and not forgetting Camilla’s King Prawn Curry.

All proceeds from food and drink sales will be donated to The Prince’s Trust, with Tesco Chief Customer Officer, Alessandra Bellini, saying: “The Coronation is a historic moment and we want to help our customers celebrate it. As one of the most enduring parts of British culture, pubs have traditionally been an important part of local communities and so a pub felt like the perfect way to bring people together to mark this special occasion and enjoy delicious food.

“We’ll donate £250,000 from the proceeds of sales of our limited-edition Coronation range in-store, along with all proceeds from the pub to The Prince’s Trust so we can all enjoy food that both tastes good and does good. Tesco and The Prince’s Trust have worked together for five years, so this is a wonderful way for us to highlight the incredible work that they do and help them to continue to support young people across the UK for many years to come.”

The King in the Castle is on Cowcross Street with bookings via OpenTable; it will be open from midday till 11pm on Thursday and Friday May 4 and 5.
