UK bars will soon be selling world’s first carbon-neutral rum
Emporia Brands strikes deal to bring Ron Barceló to the UK.
Rum fans in the UK will soon be able to enjoy their tipple of choice safe in the knowledge that they’re doing their bit for the planet, if they choose one particular brand that will soon be arriving from the Dominican Republic.
Importer and distributor of spirits, Emporia Brands, has struck a deal to add Ron Barceló to its long list of drinks, their rum the only brand made from 100 per cent sugarcane juice from the company’s own plantations in the Caribbean country. Among the best-selling of rum brands, it is the first to gain carbon neutral certification with the company minimising its dependency on fossil fuels: 90 per cent of the electricity that is used in making their products comes from renewable or green sources.
All the CO2 released from its fermentation process is also captured and transformed into the food grade of the gas to be used in fizzy drinks, with Ron Barceló certified by the independent body, Société Générale de Surveillance (SGS), as the first to gain carbon neutral certification for the company and all its products.
Emporia Brands managing director, Jack Rackham, said: “We’re thrilled to be working with Ron Barceló in the UK. We’re especially excited to be bringing in the Barceló Organic rum in as part of the range – this is the Dominican Republic’s first organic rum. Even the packaging is sustainable, made from a sugar cane-derived plant fibre case which is labelled using organic ink.”
