The seasonal summer restaurant "Berg 8044" above Zurich starts its new season on May 20. The food is served in the open air and cooked in the open outdoor kitchen. This year's menu includes Kingfish Crudo, Tomahawk and a Tavolata menu to share.

In the middle of a meadow in the open air: "Berg 8044 " above Zurich starts its new summer season today, May 20. Since its opening in 2020, the seasonal restaurant has established itself as a special place on the Zurich gastronomy scene. The weather-dependent summer restaurant is only open for a few months of the year.

The restaurant is run by the Meili family of restaurateurs from Zurich. The idea for the location originally came from a tip from architect Pia Schmid, who recognized the potential of the site early on. The Meili family developed the current concept themselves: deliberately reduced, seasonal and closely aligned with the surroundings. The food is cooked and served exclusively outside; the "Berg 8044" is open until mid-September, weather permitting.

At the center of the kitchen is the Josper oven, a wood-fired grill oven that is heated up several hours before operation begins. The open outdoor kitchen is part of the experience: guests can watch the kitchen crew at work and see how the dishes are prepared directly in the open air.

The current menu includes Merzolino bread from the Merz bakery in Chur, salad with seasonal vegetables and garden herbs, Kingfish Krudo, veal with ponzu, radish and horseradish and grilled baby lettuce with egg salad. For the main courses, the "Berg 8044" focuses on grilled meat and fish, including veal chops, beef ribeye, dung scratchings, tomahawk and sea bass from the Josper. Meat and fish dishes are served with baked potatoes and Chinese cabbage with soy and garlic.

Tavolata for groups

In addition to the à la carte selection, the "mountain tavolata" is a firm part of the concept. The multi-course menu is served to share in the middle of the table and is also available as a vegetarian option on request. The current tavolata menu includes grilled baby lettuce with egg, parsley, dill and sour cream, cod with pea salsa, cauliflower with dukkha, tahini and yoghurt, duck breast with cucumber and miso and fillet of beef with red wine jus and truffle. The price is 92 francs per person.

Berg 8044" is located at Tobelhofstrasse 21 in Zurich. In addition to the summer restaurant, the restaurant family also includes the "Zum alten Löwen", the "Ristorante Cinque" and the "Ristorante Toscano" in Niederdorf.
