Dalmatinska Zagora - Dalamtinisches Hinterland

The Dalmatian hinterland, known in the country itself also as Dalmatinska Zagora, is the only wine-growing region on the coast of Croatia that has no contact with the Mediterranean Sea. Nevertheless, the climate is influenced by its proximity, it is quite warm with smaller differences between day and night. Daytime temperatures, however, turn out to be higher than on the coast. Winters are quite moderate. However, damaging frosts can occur in autumn and also in spring. Overall, therefore, the region is clearly characterised by red wine cultivation. The soil is mostly limestone with an overlay of red soil, providing a good substrate for red wine vines. The grape variety mix for white wines as well as for red wines is a colourful mix of autochthonous and international grape varieties. Better qualities are mostly aged in barriques according to international standards. While the wine-growing regions on the coast already enjoy a certain popularity, the hinterland of Dalmatia is yet to be discovered.
