Plešivica

Plešivica is one of the wine-growing regions of Croatia's interior, located in the central north of the country between Zagreb and the Slovenian border. It is one of the smaller wine regions with a very traditional structure; most of the winegrowers grow grapes and make wine as a hobby. As with all inland regions of Croatian, the climate is continental, with the Aegean Sea too far away to have any influence. Unlike the other regions with comparably cold winters, the summers are relatively warm, nevertheless, sufficient precipitation falls. The best vineyard sites are located in the higher hills, some of which are quite steep. Grape varieties include American vines such as Noah and Delaware, in addition to domestic and international varieties. More unusual here is the appearance of Riesling, which, despite the warm climate, produces quite good results. Red grapes are also grown, primarily Blauer Portugieser, from which a light, gluggable wine in the style of a Beaujolais is pressed. Despite there being over 100 wineries in Plešivica most of the wines are consumed in the region and hardly ever cross the border.
