Son Prim

Falstaff Online Austria 2023

Word has long since got around among Spain fans that the beautiful island of Mallorca is not only a charming tourist destination and vacation paradise, but that fantastic wines also grow and are produced here. This knowledge is not even that new, as the island had already made a major appearance in the European wine world during the phylloxera catastrophe at the end of the 19th century, as the vineyards on the mainland were largely devastated. However, this first Mallorcan wine miracle quickly came to an end with the replanting. Today, it is bodegas such as Son Prim that are steadily increasing the number of fans of Mallorca wines. The winery was founded by Jaime Lliabrés, but not ad hoc. At the beginning of the 1990s, he planted a vineyard with different grape varieties, including Chardonnay, Syrah, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, to test their suitability for the terroir of Mallorca. Vinification and maturation took place in a small, makeshift cellar, with the results ranging from first-class to undrinkable. Then the whole family caught the "wine virus" and more vineyards were planted, and with the steadily growing knowledge behind them, which also led to far better wines, the Bodega Son Prim was finally founded in 2003 near the village of Sencelles. Thanks to the new cellar, the varietal wines quickly gained the highest reputation among wine lovers and enjoyed the status of an insider tip. Today, Son Prim bottles are sought after all over the world, as they are not that easy to come by. Only around 3,500 bottles are produced from one hectare of vineyard, which is also due to the very low yields. Excellent wines are produced from the international varieties Chardonnay, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, whereby the white wines are mostly bottled as single varietals, while the red wines are often a blend of 2 or 3 varieties. The island is therefore not only worth a visit for its beaches and sights.
