For the discerning Champagne lover, there is one name that can send him into ecstasy - Krug. Founded in 1843 by the German Johann-Joseph Krug, the house has dedicated itself from the beginning to the production of only extremely high-quality Champagnes and has therefore also consistently refused the temptations of increasing growth that spread in the 20th century.
By Champagne standards, one could almost speak of a boutique winery. The main focus was and is on two styles of Champagne, the Grande Cuvée without vintage and in first-class years on a vintage. The house, now run by Remy Krug, added the rare Blanc de Blancs from the Clos de Mesnil site to the portfolio in the 20th century and the Clos d'Ambonnoy Blanc de Noirs site Champagne in 1995. Needless to say, these two, when they are produced, are almost cult revered among connoisseurs.
The vineyards cover an area of 15 hectares, all of which are classified as Grand Cru, and the demand in excess of this is exclusively purchased in comparable quality. Just 500,000 bottles are produced annually under the meticulous supervision of cellar master Eric Lebel. Krug Champagnes should not necessarily be drunk young; they reward a period of ageing with great aromatic structure and depth.
These Champagnes are precious and rare; of course not a cheap pleasure, but always giving the lucky owners an exceptional pleasure.
