New donut-flavoured beer about to hit the US market

Tie-up between two New York institutions creates a unique stout.

It may take some time for the traditionalists to get their heads around this particular new brew, but from the end of February a bacon and maple syrup donut-flavoured stout will be available on draught.

The peculiar flavour combination (to many) is the result of a tie-up between US brewer Manhattan Brewing Company (MBC) and Varsity Donuts, both new New York institutions – an amalgamation that has been described as “long overdue” by MBC owner Jake Voegeli.

The “thick, dark and very sweet beer” will be available at the MBC tap, an eight-ounce glass of the stout costing around $7 (approx. £5.70 for 240ml).

MBC owner Voegeli said: “People love MBC and Varsity, so this is a great marriage of the two – it’s an awesome collaboration with two great Manhattan businesses that’s long overdue.

“The donuts are really cool because when we throw them into the vat to brew, the yeast eats the sugar and creates alcohol, meaning the sugar ferments; the sugar from the donuts gives the beer both alcohol and flavour.”

Kevin Pierce, owner of Varsity, added: “One of our most popular doughnuts is the maple bacon donut so we just thought ‘what if we made a beer out of it?’ It’s not a combination of what you’d normally think of, but it’s going to be good.”

Voegli also revealed that MBC plans more interesting collaborations with local businesses to make a range of different beers.
