Rémy Martin and 50 Cent reach ‘amicable’ settlement over bottle shape

The cognac House founded in 1724 took legal action over similarities between Branson and XO.

A legal row between Rémy Martin and 50 Cent has been settled, the dispute centring around the shape of the rapper’s Branson cognac bottle.

The world-famous cognac House celebrates its 300th anniversary next year, and in 2021 it launched legal proceedings against Sire Spirits citing intellectual property rights over the similarities between Branson cognac and their own Rémy Martin XO – both bottles are rounded and dimpled with a central label.

The famous glass decanter was created at the same time as XO in 1981, and 40 years later the firm felt there were grounds to launch a lawsuit claiming the Branson brand took its design from the XO bottle. Sire Spirits, owned by the In da Club singer, labelled the legal move as “meritless” and said it was an attempt to “destroy a competitor”.

Earlier this month it was confirmed that the two parties had reached a settlement, and while no details were revealed of what that settlement involved, a spokesman for Rémy Martin confirmed to Billboard that the agreement was “amicable”.

“Rémy appreciates and respects Mr. Jackson’s [50 Cent’s real name is Curtis James Jackson III] entry into the cognac market and the parties share a common vision for the future of this exceptional and precious spirit. The parties are gratified that this matter could be resolved amicably,” the spokesperson for Rémy Martin told Billboard.
