Return of a Classic: the Gin & Tonic named Cocktail of the Year

Gin

At the Vienna Bar & Spirits Festival on 3 November, Falstaff is set to present its awards to the best on the bar and spirits scene.

Simple, fresh, timeless. In a world of ever more complicated mixological creations, the gin & tonic stands out for its classic simplicity and understated elegance, making it one of the most popular tipples on the international bar scene.

But it’s no stranger to innovation either. What used to be served simply as gin, tonic and a slice of lemon is now virtually a science of its own: depending on the type of gin and the specific tonic chosen, a huge range of different ingredients can work alongside – from cucumber, grapefruit, and berries to coffee beans and even chocolate. A perennial favourite that combines both tradition and creativity, it’s this versatility that makes the Falstaff award for “Cocktail of the Year” no surprise.

“Whether as a refreshing aperitif, an elegant complement to some sophisticated nibbles or simply a relaxed drink with friends, there’s a gin & tonic for every occasion and every palate. From classic citrus to saffron-infused, it’s an absolute icon with a versatility that earns it the well-deserved title of Cocktail of the Year 2023,” said Falstaff editor Wolfgang M. Rosam.

Vienna Bar and Spirits Festival at Vienna Hofburg

The classic aperitif will be awarded the Falstaff “Cocktail of the Year” at the “Vienna Bar & Spirits Festival” on 3 November 2022. At this exclusive event, the largest culinary lifestyle magazine in German-speaking Europe will be inviting readers to sample an array of domestic and international specialities: gins, vodkas and rums, as well as brandies and whiskies, to name just a few. With classic aperitivi courtesy of the legendary Negroni cart of Pastamara, creative drinks will also be served to guests at the bars of the Ritz Carlton Vienna, Atmosphere and Dstrikt. In addition, the Planter's Club, Eden Bar and Sign Lounge – where cocktail virtuoso and mastermind Kan Zuo will be holding court – will move their counters to the Vienna Hofburg for the night. As a special highlight, bar manager Emanuele Broccatelli and the team from the Hotel W Rome are bringing their bar to Vienna to serve handcrafted signature cocktails “Made in Italy”.
