The Green Scene: Where to get the best Matcha in Vienna

Matcha
Vienna
Café

Forget espresso – matcha is having a moment. From creamy lattes to refreshing iced teas, the finely ground green tea is taking over Vienna’s cafés. Here are the city’s best spots for a green caffeine kick.

Vienna is long past just Melange and Verlängerter – these days, the matcha latte has become a true staple on the menus of the city’s trendiest cafés. Falstaff has scouted the city and gathered the most exciting cafés where the green stuff is served in a way that’s stylish, modern – and simply delicious.

The Coffee

Since last summer, The Coffee in Vienna's first district has been bringing a touch of Brazilian matcha culture to the city. The must-try here? Ichigo Matcha – a colorful blend of matcha, milk and fresh strawberries that tastes as good as it looks. Perfectly refreshing and wonderfully instagrammable.

Chasen Brew

New to Vienna’s scene, Chasen opened earlier this year on Rilkeplatz in the 4th district. Named after the traditional Japanese matcha whisk, the café focuses on carefully prepared, authentic matcha. Also available: specialty coffee, fine pastries and a chic, minimalist interior.

The matcha hype continues: whether classic, iced or with mango and strawberry, the Japanese tea brings a variety of superfood power, and the lush green glows from every cup. Fine...

No Panic Coffee

With two locations – one by the Votivkirche in the 9th district and another in the 4th – No Panic Coffee is a combination café, brunch bar and wine bar. Alongside the classic matcha latte, there are creative twists like matcha affogato with pistachio ice cream, matcha tiramisu and matcha cake. Minimalist interiors, top-quality coffee and plenty of matcha make it well worth visiting.

In contrast to the branch near the main university, the location near the TU is cooler and more minimalist, but offers much more space for those in search of really good - and...

Coffee & Bagels has its finger on the pulse: a Parisian feel with fig confit and walnuts or a New York vibe with bacon, cream cheese and pastrami. Plus excellent coffee and...

Green Tea Blue Sky

Could this be Vienna’s best kept secret for matcha fans? Since opening in late 2024, this café has combined tea culture with ceramic art. Behind it are Richard Eigner, who has devoted himself to Japanese tea, and Maria Schlechter, who curates the ceramics. Alongside carefully selected teas – with matcha as the star – you’ll also find beautiful accessories such as teapots and chasen, the traditional bamboo whisks for frothing matcha.

Shodai

Shodai brings Asian patisserie and plenty of green dreams to Vienna, making you feel instantly feel transported to Asia. Alongside classics like matcha latte, there are creative drinks with taro, tapioca or yuzu. Sweet tooths are spoiled with matcha crêpe cake, cheesecake or soft serve with beans and jelly – the hardest part is deciding.
