Falstaff Wineguide Austria/South Tyrol 2021/22

Squaring the wine is the goal of the Gager winery in Deutschkreutz, Burgenland. Exactly this square in different color compositions also adorns the labels of the Gager wines, which have been used since the beginning. Here, everything is done to achieve exactly this quadrature: perfection in wine. What started as a hobby for his parents in the 1980s, Horst Gager continues in the second generation, and the future seems to be secured, too, because his son Jonas, who is a student at the Klosterneuburg wine school, is already working hard in the family business.

By exclusively pressing red wine, the Gager winery has already positioned itself far beyond the country's borders as a specialist for red wine. When it comes to sourcing raw materials, however, the path does not have to be a long one, as these can be found right on the doorstep in the form of perfect grapes. And because the company attaches great importance to regionality and a resource-conserving approach to nature, it has already been certified as "sustainable".

Currently, 38 hectares of vineyards are cultivated. The assortment comprises eight sorts of grape, among them also the regional main varieties and at the same time the Gagers' hobbyhorse: Blaufränkisch. In addition to the region's leading variety, Zweigelt, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot are also flagship wines. Characteristic for the Gager wines, besides the deep dark colour, are above all the compact body and the enormous ageing potential - qualities that together have already ensured a long list of successes.
