Elvis’s favourite snack the inspiration for new whiskey

The flavours of the King’s Fool’s Gold Loaf packed into Midnight Snack.

Anyone with a passing interest in the life and times of Elvis Presley would be aware that he had a penchant for his food – a particular favourite of his in later years the Fool’s Gold Loaf.

Comprising of peanut butter, bacon and bananas – yes, that is correct – packed inside a hollowed-out loaf of French bread, which is then deep fried, it was one of the King’s staples, with his personal cook under instruction to have one standing by at all times.

Now, Elvis Whiskey is launching Midnight Snack, their Fool’s Gold Loaf-inspired creation that incorporates the flavours of his favourite sandwich into “a perfectly balanced blend of sweet, savoury, salty and smoky”, according to its makers.

Elvis was rumoured to have taken a few friends on a midnight flight to Denver from Memphis when he heard about this sandwich, his destination the Colorado Gold Mine Company, where he proceeded to buy the recipe.

Now, you can try it in liquid form, Elvis Whiskey part of the portfolio of South Carolina-based Grain & Barrel Spirits, with founder Matti Anttila saying: “Elvis is one of the most significant cultural icons of the 20th century and continues to inspire his fans today.

“Flavoured whiskeys are continuing to grow in popularity, with flavoured whiskey growing +19 per cent, and peanut butter-flavoured whiskey growing 200 per cent in the United States, leaving our team especially excited to introduce ‘Midnight Snack’ to our growing portfolio of Elvis-inspired whiskeys.”

The 70-proof whiskey is priced at $34.99 and can be found in stores as well as online sites like Caskers and Reserve Bar.
