Is Parmesan the ultimate protein snack?
Parmesan doesn't just tantalize the taste buds—it's packed with vital nutrients like high-quality protein. But can it truly stand in for a protein bar?
In supermarkets today, the label "protein" is ubiquitous. Yet one of the richest sources isn't a trendy bar or shake—it's a chunk of Parmesan cheese. French influencer and biochemist Jessie Inchauspé, aka the Glucose Goddess, has long swapped conventional protein powders for cheese, carrying cubes to fend off hunger between meals, as noted by Vogue.
High Sodium Alert
Is there something to it? Standard protein bars deliver up to 20 grams of protein, powders up to 30 grams per serving. Matching that requires about 80 grams of Parmesan—roughly 330 calories, 20 grams of fat, and negligible carbs. Nutritionists warn that its sky-high sodium and saturated fat levels pose risks like cardiovascular issues.
That 80-gram serving packs up to 16 grams of saturated fat—nearing the daily limit of 20 grams for women or 30 grams for men. Still, Parmesan is a great source of protein, delivering all nine essential amino acids the body can't make on its own.
