Wine producer urges rivals to embrace the paper bottle

Cantina Goccia’s environmentally-friendly filling service now available for fellow winemakers.

Italian wine producer Cantina Goccia is opening up its bottle-filling service to rivals at its Umbria plant in the hope it will help persuade them to make the move from glass to paper and “massively decarbonise the drinks industry”.

The firm has commissioned a world-first purpose-built filling machine designed only for paper bottles, capable of filling 1000 bottles per hour, with plans in place to double that capacity in the future.

The bottles have been designed in Britain by Frugalpac based in Ipswich, composed of a paper shell, food grade recyclable plastic pouch and plastic screwcap.

The firm launched its ‘alternative’ packaging format in June 2020, 114,000 paper Frugal bottles filled in the two-and-half years since – 64,000 with Cantina Goccia wine and the other 50,000 used for third-party produce.

Co-owner Ceri Parke said: “Whilst we were proud to be the first wine to be sold in a Frugal bottle, we want to play our part in helping other brands to make the switch to a more environmentally-friendly bottle.

“We believe the Frugal bottle has the potential to massively decarbonise the drinks industry, and we’re proud to be launching a dedicated new filling service to help other brands reduce their carbon footprint too.”
