Bodegas Muga

Falstaff Online Österreich 2023

Haro in the La Rioja Alta sub-region is something like the secret capital of the entire region. Where else can you find so many iconic wineries in such a small area, especially in the famous train station district, which reads like a "Who's Who" of great Rioja wines when you take a stroll. And you are sure to come across another big name - that of Bodegas Muga. Founded in 1932 by the Muga family, the winery, which is still family-owned today, is still one of the pioneers, having made a significant contribution to the success story of Rioja wines. And it is one of those bodegas that upholds the flag of tradition. Today, Bodega Muga cultivates 250 hectares of vineyards on a plateau where the combination of Atlantic, Mediterranean and continental climates provides ideal conditions, especially for Rioja's most important grape variety, Tempranillo. The chalky soils also contribute significantly to the finesse, complexity and longevity of Muga's wines. Grapes are purchased from around 100 hectares. However, the winegrowers are advised and supported with regard to the increasing quality of the measures in the vineyard. And there is something else that sets the bodega apart - the maintenance of its own cooperage, which produces the barrels required specifically for Reservas and Gran Reservas and maintains and renews the existing stock. Only some of the wines are matured in new barrels, while some are always aged in used barrels so that the wood does not drown out the fine, delicate fruit that can only be produced in this cool environment in the west of the region. The Reservas and Gran Reservas have long been classics of the region and are held in the highest esteem by connoisseurs due to their development, certain ageing potential and longevity. The "ARO" is not only one of the most expensive red wines in Spain, it also enjoys the reputation of a wine icon of the Iberian Peninsula. The wine critics' ratings are correspondingly high, often in the range of the famous 1er Crus from Bordeaux, sometimes even surpassing them.
