The Seven Best Seaside Restaurants in the World

What could be better than a fresh sea breeze and delectable of food? Falstaff has come up with the seven best seaside restaurants in the world. Take your pick.

There always is something compelling about the seaside. The waves, the air, the sound, the light – everything takes on a different hue beside the water – whether seas are calm or stormy. Above all, sea air gives you a great appetite – here is where to satisfy it.

Salinas, Wilderness, South Africa

Yes, the address is indeed a place called Wilderness on South Africa's scenic Garden Route. The menu is family-friendly and holds some South African classics like Fish Bobotie and Smoorsnoek – but curries, salads and fish and chips ensure that everyone is happy.

Kaikoura Seafood BBQ, Kaikoura, New Zealand

This may just be New Zealand’s best beach seafood shack. Kaikoura on New Zealand’s South Island is a hotspot for dolphin swimming, so you’ll be hungry. Pāua (abalone) fritters, grilled crayfish and garlic scallops are on offer, as is a view of the South Pacific. Lip smackingly delicious.

Casa de Chá Boa Nova, Leça da Palmeira, Portugal

The setting of the two-Michelin-starred Boa Nova Teahouse is striking: it sits on craggy rocks on a stunning stretch of beach just north of Porto. On this picturesque spot chef Rui Paula creates culinary magic with a locally sourced menu. Worth every penny.

Ocean, Kennebunkport, Maine, USA

The porch of this typical New England clapboard inn wraps itself around a sophisticated dining room, overlooking Walker´s Point and roaring Atlantic waves. It’s been voted “best ocean view” of the US. On the menu? Maine lobster of course! Enchanting and unpretentious.

Nepenthe, Big Sur, California, USA

If you love the Pacific, this is a must: located on Highway 1, Nepenthe with classic California cuisine, is just a few miles south of Big Sur on one of the great ocean roads of the world. The views are dramatic. The wine list is a dream, too.

Grotta Palazese, Polignano a Mare, Puglia, Italy

This spectacular dining spot really is a grotto – right inside the limestone cliffs of Polignano-a-Mare. Naturally seafood looms large at this classic Italian restaurant and- but comes with an unforgettable setting.

Porthminster Beach Café, St Ives, Cornwall, United Kingdom

This Cornish beachside restaurant offers a relaxed summer holiday vibe with its friendly service and unstuffy attitude - combined with views of St. Ives Bay. Much emphasis is on recycling and sustainability and there also is home-grown produce from the garden.
