Western Australia opens its arms to British workers

Delegation to the UK aims to recruit staff for the hospitality industry.

In a move that will likely cause consternation amongst employers in the UK hospitality industry, Western Australian businesses are issuing an open invitation to the British to come and work in the ‘Wildflower State’.

A delegation of business professionals from Australia will be supported by regional government representatives on a tour of the UK to promote the area, and highlight the opportunities available in both hotel and hospitality venues.

While the UK hospitality sector is crying out for staff, the lure of Australia’s year-round warm weather may prove attractive to some, with Bradley Woods of the Australian Hotels Association Western Australia, AHA (WA), insisting they offer a compelling case for workers to travel down under.

“Put simply, there has never been a stronger case for British, Irish and Scottish workers to migrate to WA and take advantage of the thousands of jobs on offer in WA’s hospitality industry,” said Woods, who also highlighted the lower cost of living, stronger job security and lower energy costs. “There are countless reasons why WA is the best place in the world for those looking for a new home.”

In 2012 a delegation to Ireland resulted in what Woods described as “countless workers relocating”, with the delegation heading to the UK this year representing businesses in Perth, the Southwest, the Coral Coast, the Golden Outback and the North West.

A recent billboard campaign was run in central London’s Piccadilly Circus, extolling the virtues of a region that covers a third of Australia.
