Tasting Notes
"Why is the '64 Latour so good? It's probably one of the best wines of the vintage." This is what I wrote enthusiastically after a wonderful magnum that I tasted in October 1998. The secret solution is the fact that the Latour harvest was finished much earlier than elsewhere and so was hardly affected by the subsequent rain madness. The result is a wine that may not have the greatest length, but its aromas are simply fascinating. Lightened carmine garnet, damp leaves, but also delicate hints of mint, fine cassis notes, suede, some Malaga, raisins, dark chocolate, has a finely balanced acidity, nervous wine of medium complexity, balanced and delicate. (10/98 Dr. Baumann, Linz) This time I could not evaluate: strong ruby garnet, good colour core, broad edge brightening, vital color, strongly madeirized in the nose, unfortunately broken.
